Crusaders were founded in 2005 as Celtic Crusaders and first entered National League Two in 2006. They were promoted to National League One as champions in their second season (2007) after losing in the final eliminator in the 2006 play-offs.
In 2008 the Celtic Crusaders signalled their ambition for Super League rugby and were one of 19 clubs to submit an application for a Super League licence. They were accepted and started playing in the Super League in 2009.
